The Forsyth County Central Library in downtown Winston-Salem, NC underwent a significant transformation, blending modern functionality with a respect for the original structure. The project expanded the library from 85,000 to 105,000 sq ft, with approximately 50,000 square feet of new construction. The 1950s portion of the building was demolished, while the 1979 addition was gutted and repurposed. The redesigned library features a variety of new amenities, including a 308-seat auditorium, flexible event spaces, a café, a large outdoor lawn, a children’s program space, and a reading garden with sculptures and granite seating. This reimagined facility serves as a vibrant hub for the community, designed to meet the needs of 21st-century patrons while preserving the library’s historical significance. Fostering a welcoming and accessible environment for all visitors, our landscape architecture plans ensured that the new outdoor spaces—such as the reading garden and event lawn—were integrated seamlessly into the urban fabric and emphasized connectivity, sustainability, and community engagement.
