A centrally located, publicly accessible urban green space providing a place to enjoy anything from food trucks to movie screenings to community yoga sessions.

Multipurpose Research & Innovation Center
Research & lab facility containing wet labs, classroom space, a conference center, offices & a business accelerator.
The Coal Pit @ Bailey Power Plant
Office, Retail & Entertainment Space.
Once a coal-fired power plant, this mixed-use building houses various tenants & a “Coal pit” below retired railroad tracks, converted into an outdoor dining area, often showcases live music in the evenings.
 
Bowman Gray Center for Medical Education & Wake Downtown
Designed with the next generation of physician leaders in mind. Houses Wake Forest School of Medicine programs & provides undergraduate students with an environment for collaboration & further learning experiences in one of the fastest-growing innovation districts in the country.
 
Link Apartments® Innovation Quarter
New Mixed-Use Development.

Comprised of more than 340 apartment units, approximately 5,000 sq. ft. of retail space & a parking deck with over 850 spaces, all on 3.4 acres.
 
Long Branch Trail
1.7 Mile Greenway A multi-use path utilizing an inactive NCDOT/PART railroad corridor that runs the length of the IQ & connects downtown Winston-Salem to the larger community.
 
Research Parkway
The 1.5 mile, 4-lane roadway runs south from Third St. to Rams Dr.-while passing under Business 40. The development of this roadway at the edge of Downtown establishes developable areas on either side & utilities to serve future development. The street was designed to be an urban street, with on-street parking, sidewalks, street trees, lighting, etc.
525@Vine
Originally a tobacco factory, 525@Vine has been fully renovated into a modern mixed-use building with office spaces, educational facilities, fitness clubs & more.

Inmar Headquarters

Historic tobacco warehouses transformed into a state-of-the-art LEED Platinum office building.
Infrastructure & Streetscapes
The project was a fresh start for a deserted industrial area & provided the framework & inspiration for millions of dollars in investment. The design included on-street parking, specialty pavements & crosswalks, street lights, street trees & median plantings, site furnishings & amenities. IQ Streetscapes are vital in defining the urban character of the innovation district, providing safe & functional corridors for motorists, bicyclists & pedestrians.

Innovation Quarter
The Innovation Quarter is the largest urban, mixed-use innovation district in North Carolina and one of the largest in the country with approximately 200+ acres in the east end of downtown Winston-Salem. What was once part of a booming tobacco & cigarette manufacturing industry, is now a reimagined and extraordinary innovation hub focused on biotechnology/ advanced medical breakthroughs, creating solutions, improving lives, a connector of neighborhoods, a new model for the ‘greening’ of urban environment, & a catalyst for other redevelopment projects in & around downtown. Creating a new way of seeing the city, IQ’s North District is a representation for historical preservation & adaptation, multi-modal transportation infrastructure, innovative design & sustainability & is an inspiration to other metropolises- proof of the dramatic change public spaces & a strong vision can have on the quality of life in cities.

Stimmel has been responsible for Planning, Landscape Architectural and Civil Engineering services at the Innovation Quarter since 2008. 

IQ’s mission is to create an urban, mixed-use hub that drives economic growth & provides a vibrant place for creativity, collaboration, & innovation to occur. The project has been over two decades in the making, beginning with a vision, & a desire to help revive downtown. Most of the early work included land acquisition, rezoning, brownfield designation, railroad relocation, demolition & remediation activities. With the generous gift of the land & existing industrial buildings in North District, a partnership with the City for streetscape & infrastructure investments, & a developer with the shared vision & ability to deliver, the North District transformation officially kicked off in 2010. Within a decade, IQ has become a center of activity, attracting corporations, researchers, students, entrepreneurs, retail, restaurants and a brewery, & most importantly, people young & old want to live in this vibrant community. While the Streetscape & Infrastructure was a critical, catalyst project, the development & programming of Bailey Park, Long Branch Trail & the Coal Pit are the lifeblood of this district.
