“

This is such an incredible space for our citizens to enjoy. So much thought & effort went into each detail of this project, & the finished product is something we can all be proud of for decades to come.”

The Morganton Courthouse Square project is a transformative effort that has revitalized a historic 1.7-acre downtown square into a dynamic, year-round community hub. Completed as part of a $4 million investment, this vibrant space now serves as a centerpiece for festivals, concerts, fairs, and daily activities. Featuring a state-of-the-art stage with integrated amenities like storage, restrooms, and electrical systems, the square combines functional modernity with deep historical and cultural preservation.

The project pays homage to Morganton’s rich history by incorporating features such as memorials, artistic outlines of the former jail footprint, and the use of local salvaged materials in the stage backdrop. A colorful mandala art installation and enhanced green spaces encourage exploration and engagement while supporting a strong sense of community pride.

As the Landscape Architect, Stimmel led the design process, collaborating with a 33-member Steering Committee and engaging the public through well-attended input meetings. Their contributions spanned programming, conceptual planning, and final documentation to deliver a design that balances accessibility, flexibility, and aesthetic appeal. Key elements include ADA-compliant pathways, updated infrastructure for downtown events, and spaces designed for food trucks, seating, and gatherings.
By integrating progressive design principles with historical preservation, Stimmel created a multi-functional space that blends contemporary needs with Morganton’s unique identity. The Courthouse Square now serves as a catalyst for downtown revitalization, inspiring further development and ensuring this cherished landmark remains a focal point for generations to come.

San Diego artist Miki Iwasaki contributed a series of custom art installations funded by the NC Arts Council and the City of Morganton. His pieces weave together history, culture, and natural elements, fostering cultural connectivity and enhancing the square’s artistic identity. These works invite exploration and serve as a vibrant backdrop to the square’s evolving role as a community centerpiece.
