Historic Preservation Urban Design

Located in the heart of Innovation Quarter in downtown Winston-Salem, the renovated Bailey Power Plant is the district’s newest addition.

Originally constructed in 1947 to provide steam and electricity to the surrounding R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, the building sat dormant for almost 20 years & was recently reincarnated as a mixed-use workplace and entertainment hub – creating a new kind of energy for this growing district. Along with Bailey Park, this area is the central hub for activity, entertainment, & recreation in downtown Winston-Salem.

Bailey Power Plant is an integral piece of Winston-Salem’s past. The building includes (2) 14-story smokestacks, a 2-story, 4,500 sq. ft. hall, which housed turbines & major equipment, & an elevated set of railroad tracks that provided coal supply to the complex. The design team intentionally designed the power plant to draw people in & spark connections & conversation through physical spaces: Places for people to enjoy, eat, recreate. Places for students to hang out in between classes. Places for people to come on the weekends, to spend time when they are not working.
